Objective: To analyze how Henry’s word choice encouraged his audience to act. (STANDARD RI.6)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by using Henry’s speech as a model to write an argument to support a claim.
  
Agenda:
1.    SSR – 25 min
2.    Grammar Notes #4 (5th block, we’ll do this tomorrow) – 15 min
3.    Individually, read “Speech in the Virginia Convention” p. 144 – 20 min
4.      EXIT SLIP p. 151 #3 – Using Henry’s style as a model, write a speech addressing some condition in your school or neighborhood. Choose a burning issue that has been sharply dividing the people involved.  If possible, give your speech to the class.  – 15 min
5.    Continue Choice Reading – 15 min

AP English Literature and Composition

Student Learning Objective: (1) To practice framing quotations, and (2) To draw parallels between Lord of the Flies and “The Lottery.”(STANDARD RL.2)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by analyzing the governing systems in both the short story and the novel, and explaining at least three pros and three cons to each.
  
Agenda:
Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: serenading (verb): a complimentary performance of vocal or instrumental music in the open air at night, as by a lover under the window of his lady

“As though he were serenading the rising sun, Jack went on blowing till the shelters were astir and the hunters crept to the platform and the littluns whimpered as now they so frequently did” (Golding 125).

Assessment: Analyze the logic of the government systems in the short story and the novel.  Discuss at least three pros and cons of both established societies.

Homework: Chapters 7-8 “Shadows and Tall Tress” and “Gift for the Darkness” p. 109-144
