Objective: To compose an objective summary stating the key points of Chapters 1-3 of The Great Gatsby without adding personal opinions or feelings. (STANDARD RL.2)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by writing a one-ish page summary of the main events of Chapters 1-3 and comparing summaries with a table partner.

  3. Discuss Chapter 3 of The Great Gatsby – 15 min
  4. Read aloud half of Chapter 4 – 25 min
  5. Continue Gatsby

Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: coquetry (noun): the behavior or arts of flirtation

“Mrs. Bogle who was many times a grandmother, but had a blushing air of coquetry about her that cloaked her sunken cheeks” (Hurston 69). 

Student Learning Objective: To draw parallels between Janie’s experiences and those observed in the Rita Dove poems. (STANDARD RL.1, RL.2)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by locating and analyzing three common traits between Janie and the speaker in the poems.

  2. Class Discussion, based on the poems you chose to consider
    for a close reading – 30 min
  3. Discuss/Analyze Chapters 4-5 – 30 min
