American Literature Lesson

Objective: To become familiar with the four main characters of Death of a Salesman and their relationships and conflicts with each other. (STANDARD RL.1-2, RL.7)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by listing the names of the four main characters and describing their relationships to each other.

Agenda:
1.      Notebook #11 – Slam Poem: “Mrs. Dahmer” – 15 min
2.      Go over the answers to Grammar Quiz 6B – 5 min
3.      Continue Death of a Salesman – Goal = p. 15-37 – 70 min

Assessment: Oral question and answer

Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: denounce (verb): to condemn publicly; to make a formal accusation against

“Then when her ready cash was gone, had come Who Flung to denounce his predecessor as a scoundrel and took up around the house himself” (Hurston 118).

Student Learning Objective: To draw parallels between bildungsroman characters Janie from Their Eyes Were Watching God and the girl from “A White Heron.” (STANDARD RL.1, RL.2)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by comparing the maturation process of both lead characters.

1.      Notebook: A final 10 minutes on “Poetry Lesson” poem OR free write about something else – 10 min
2.      Discuss novel, Chapters 11-12 – 20 min
3.      Read aloud: “A White Heron” – 30 min

Assessment: Class Discussion of the parallels between this short story and the novel.

Homework: Chapters 13-15, p. 116-138
