Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: pugnaciously (adj): inclined to quarrel or fight readily; quarrelsome; belligerent; combative

“His ponderous-looking belly that used to thrust out so pugnaciously and intimidate folks, sagged like a load suspended from his loins” (Hurston 77).

Student Learning Objective: (1) To define and identify various forms of figurative language. (2) To draw parallels between Janie’s experiences and those observed in the Rita Dove poems. (STANDARD RL.4)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by locating figurative language in Rita Dove’s poems.
  
Agenda:
1.      Notebook Writing: Continue yesterday’s cheesy poem  by placing it within a bigger poem – 15 min
2.      Discuss Rita Dove poems (all) and compare the speaker of the poems to Janie – 30 min
3.      Discuss Chapter 6 – 20 min
4.      Student Work time – 30 min
