American Literature Lesson
17 September 2019

Objective: To prove your knowledge of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in a reading passage/objective test. (STANDARD RL.1-4)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by answering at least 40 questions correctly on the novel test.

Agenda:
1.      Go over answers to Grammar Quiz 4B – 5 min
2.      Offer another optional third chance quiz – 10 min
3.      Notebook: Writing into the day – 20 min
a.       Read informational text and underline or note the main claim of the article.
b.      Highlight/underline the writer's strongest evidence
c.       Write in notebook informally – 5 min
d.      Write about what you want to know more about on this topic – 2 min
e.       Write about where you stand on the issue today – 3 min
4.      The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn novel test – 55 min

Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: efflorescence (noun): the state or a period of flowering

“It was clear to the bottom and bright with the efflorescence of tropical weed and coral” (Golding 12). 

Student Learning Objective: (1) To prove your knowledge of Frankenstein in a graded class discussion. (STANDARDS SL.1) (2) To be introduced to the three main characters of the novel, noting their natural leadership skills. (STANDARD RL.3, RL.5)

Success Criteria: (1) Students will show mastery by achieving an 80% or higher on the Frankenstein graded class discussion. (2) Students will show mastery by creating a character web of the main characters in the novel.
  
Agenda
1.      1 hour graded class discussion - 60 min (actually, until the fire drill at 10:10)
2.      Constitution Day video  - 4 min
3.      Introduce novel, Lord of the Flies
a.       Discuss Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs.svg  – 5 min
b.      Read aloud half of chapter 1 – 15 min

Assessment: 1 hour graded class discussion

Homework: Finish Chapter 1 “The Sound of the Shell” p. 7-31
