American Literature Lesson
10 September 2019

Objective: To understand the wit and the truth behind Ben Franklin’s aphorisms (and to use them as models to write your own. (STANDARD RL.9, RI.9, W.2)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by writing three or four witty/truthful aphorisms with high school freshmen as the audience.
  
Agenda:
1.      Notebook: Writing into the day…  Prompt: “How do you feel about robot cars?” - 15 min
2.      Read from textbook, “Poor Richard’s Almanack” p. 117 – 10 min
3.      EXIT SLIP: p. 119 Writing Options #3 – Write three or four aphorisms that express the advice you would give to a freshman. Imitate Franklin’s style by using crisp, witty language. – 10 min
4.      Student work time for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – 55 min
a.       Small group discussion (the Peter Wilkes brothers conflict and resolution) p. 195-218 (graphic organizer, if you desire) – 15 min
b.      Large group discussion (what is confusing?) – 10 min
c.       Continue reading p. 218-231 silently – 25 min

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by using textual evidence to verbally support their opinion’s regarding the author’s choice to change the narration’s point of view.
  
Agenda:
1.      WOD Quiz! – 5 min
2.      Summarize the main events from Chapters 12-15 - 20 min
3.      EXIT SLIP: The author’s purpose in changing the point of view was… - 10 min
4.      Student work time - 45 min
a.       Continue Frankenstein, Chapters 16-18
b.      Consider answering a Google Classroom Question
