American Literature Lesson
20 September 2019

Objective: To understand the desperation of the colonists fighting in the American Revolution, and how T. Paine’s speech inspired deserting soldiers to keep fighting. (STANDARD RI.9)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by explaining their decision about joining Washington’s army in a letter that uses two examples from “The Crisis.”
  
Agenda:
1.      Discuss next week's schedule (UNIT TEST TUESDAY!) – 5 min
2.      SSR – 20 min 
3.      Notebook: Writing into the day - 20 min
a.       Read informational text and underline or note the main claim of the article.
b.      Highlight/underline the writer's strongest evidence
c.       Write in notebook informally for 5 min.
d.      Write about what you want to know more about on this topic. 2 min
e.       Write about where you stand on the issue today. 3 min
4.      Go over answers to Grammar Quiz #5 – 5 min
5.      Read “The Crisis” p. 161 – 10 min
6.      EXIT SLIP p. 167 #1: Imagine that you are a teenager living in the colonies at the time of the Revolution. Write a letter to Thomas Paine, explaining why you will not join Washington’s army – or why reading The Crisis has convinced you to join. – 10 min
7.      Begin reading The Great Gatsby Chapter 1 aloud - 20 min

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by using a quotation OR two examples to answer the Google Classroom Questions.

Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: interminable (adj): incapable of being terminated; unending

“An interminable dawn faded the stars out, and at last light, sad and grey, filtered into the shelter” (Golding 99). 

1.      Read/Discuss/Analyze Chapters 4-5  – 30 min
2.      Introduce Extra Credit Assignment (on Google Classroom) – 5 min
3.      Google Classroom Discussion Questions class time – 55 min
