Objective: To be exposed to the format of the SAT reading test and to learn some reading strategies. (STANDARD RI/RL)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by practicing a few reading strategies independently and evaluating their success.

Agenda:
1.    Go over the answers to Grammar Midterm Quiz – 10 min
2.    Notebook – 10 min “WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE SAT – provide details”
3.    Practice SAT Reading Pre-test Passage 2 (timed reading/answer session) - 13 min
4.    Get scores for pretest – 5 min
5.    Reading Strategies (practice on Test #1 Passage 2) – 42 min
a.   Contiguous Read – 7 min
b.   Write a 5-sentence Summary on notebook paper. – 3 min
c.    Share your Summary with a table partner – 1 min
d.   Re-read each paragraph and put a 1-2 word summary of that paragraph in the margin – 8 min
e.   Pass out questions.  Read the Questions BUT NOT THE ANSWER CHOICES – 3 min
f.     Label each question (H) Hard or (E) Easy. – 2 min
g.    Answer the questions individually – 6 min
h.   Scan answers (looking for improvement from Pre-test) – 5 min
i.     Go over answers – 3 min

Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: mercilessly (adj): without mercy; having or showing no mercy; cruel

“I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man” (Walker 315). 

Student Learning Objective: To draw parallels between The Color Purple and “Everyday Use” (particularly regarding the characterization, themes, bildungsroman genre, and the literary devices used). (STANDARD RL.1, RL.2)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by choosing the character who demonstrates the most growth OR comparing and contrasting characters text-to-text.

  1. WOD Pop Quiz – 5 min
  2. Read “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, drawing parallels between the short story and The Color Purple.  – 25 min
  3. My quilts – 5 min
  4. EXIT SLIP: Which of the three main characters, Maggie, Dee, or Mama, grew the most from the beginning of the short story to the end?  OR How do the characters in “Everyday Use” compare or contrast to the characters in The Color Purple?
  5. Discuss Novel p. 124-159
