Objective: To be exposed to the format of the SAT reading test and to learn some strategies for timed reading tests. (STANDARD RI/RL)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by practicing a different reading strategy independently and evaluating their success.

Agenda:
1.    SSR – 20 min with a Notebook Entry #   - 5 min = 25 min
2.    Discuss yesterday’s Pre-test and Practice Test #1 Results: - 5 min
a.   1st Block Pre-test: 51%
b.   5th Block Pre-test: 47.5%
c.    1st Block Practice Test #1: 53.5%
d.   5th Block Practice Test #1: 54.0%
3.      Test Anxiety Study – 5 min
4.      Reading Strategies for Timed Reading discussed yesterday: - 5 min
a.       Write a one to two word summary of each paragraph in the margin while reading.
b.      Read the questions before reading the passage (but don’t read the answer choices).
c.       Label the questions with (H) Hard or (E) Easy.
d.      Don’t leave any bubbles not filled in on the scantron.
5.      More Reading Strategies – 20 min
6.      One more practice passage – 13 min

Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: gallantry (noun): courageous behavior, especially in battle

“COUNTY ATTORNEY (with the gallantry of a young politician).  And yet, for all their worries, what would we do without the ladies?” (Glaspell 1077).

Student Learning Objective: (1) To be exposed to a drama. (STANDARD RL.7) (2) To draw parallels between The Color Purple, “Everyday Use,” and “Trifles” (particularly regarding the characterization, themes, bildungsroman genre, and the literary devices used). (STANDARD RL.2)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by identifying common character traits, text-to-text.

  1. Assign parts and read “Trifles,” drawing comparisons between the play and the novel. – 45 min

Assessment #1: How do Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale eventually become allies?  Why?  How does this partnership between women compare to the women in “Everyday Use” or The Color Purple?
