American Literature

Objective: (1) To prove your knowledge of the grammatical concepts taught in Grammar Notes #1-7 (STANDARD L.1, L.2), and (2) To be exposed to the format of the SAT reading test and to learn some strategies for timed reading tests. (STANDARD RI.1-4/RL.1-4)

Success Criteria: (1) Students will show mastery by using their Grammar Notes #1-7 and past quizzes to earn at least an 80% on the Grammar Midterm Quiz, and (2) Students will show mastery by practicing one reading strategy independently and evaluating their success.

Agenda:
1.      Finish Choice Reading Interviews – 35 min (1st block only)
2.    Pop Quiz: Open Notes Grammar “Midterm” – 25 min
3.    Practice SAT-like Reading Passage (timed reading/answer session) - 13 min
4.    Reading Strategies for Timed Reading – 20 min
5.    SSR, if time remaining – 25 min (5th block only)

AP English Literature and Composition

Vocabulary Word-of-the-Day: mercilessly (adj): without mercy; having or showing no mercy; cruel

“I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man” (Walker 315). 

Student Learning Objective: To draw parallels between The Color Purple and “Everyday Use” (particularly regarding the characterization, themes, bildungsroman genre, and the literary devices used). (STANDARD RL.1)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by choosing the character who demonstrates the most growth OR comparing and contrasting characters text-to-text.

  1. AP Exam Free Response Question 1 – What’s the assignment?  What’s your plan? – 20 min
  2. Read “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, drawing parallels between the short story and The Color Purple.  – 25 min
  3. EXIT SLIP: Which of the three main characters, Maggie, Dee, or Mama, grew the most from the beginning of the short story to the end? OR How do the characters in “Everyday Use” compare or contrast to the characters in The Color Purple?
