American Literature Lesson

Objective: To read and analyze "The Gettysburg Address" and to rewrite it in your own words and understand the main concepts of “Untie His Hands.” (STANDARD W.2, RI.9, RL.1)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by rewriting "The Gettysburg Address" in contemporary language.

Agenda:
1.      SSR - 20 min
2.      SSR Exit Slip – 5 min
3.      Complete the checklist regarding the reading of “The Gettysburg Address” p. 315
4.      Complete the checklist regarding the reading of “Untie His Hands” p. 318

Assessment: Turn in paragraph(s) response to Writing Option #1 p. 316; Turn in
answers to Discussion Questions #2-5 on p. 321

Objective: To work collaboratively to create and maintain a group “book talk” blog on the chosen literature circle novel. (STANDARD RL. 1-5, W.2, W.6)

Success Criteria: Students will show mastery by producing two thought-provoking, critical analysis blog posts of their literature circle novel.

Agenda:
1.      Read informational text: "Studies offer mixed messages on social media's effect on young people" - Identify the claim and best evidence to support the claim.  Take notes on Note-catcher - 25 min
2.      Discuss novel with group – 15 min
3.      Create and proof-read blogs/Post two blogs by the end of the block – 30 min
4.      Read independently (or collaboratively) – 20 min

Assessment: Two blog posts (7-8)

Homework: Continue reading Literature Circle Novel according to reading schedule set by group; Last three pages of Personal Narrative due tomorrow
